Things I Wish I Knew About Blogging Sooner

As I have mentioned before, I started blogging in January of 2012. I had never been an avid follower of anyones blog before so I have no idea what made me decide to start one, but I did. Like most of us bloggers, it started out with just wanting to share all the randomness in this head of mine. But, as you start blogging you start to wish that those numbers on the sidebar would start increasing. Or that your page views would just increase from 10 per day to 20.  I remember I started desiring to gain followers but I had no idea how to do it or where to start. So this is a post dedicated to  5 things I wish I knew back in January of 2012.

Bloggers love helping other bloggers
I hate to impose on other people so I thought actually contacting some of the bloggers I loved  was out of the question. I mean why would a blogger with 600+ followers want to help someone with 6 followers?
Because they use to have six followers too and the understand that's why! Not everyone you contact with questions is going to be kind or even email you back, but the majority of them will and are happy to do it! So go e-mail one of your favorite bloggers today…I double dog dare ya.

Comment, Comment, Comment
When you read a post you love, comment on it. Those comments really are read and sometimes even replied to.
When I see someone commenting continuously on my blog, it shows me that they are a faithful reader. If you are a faithful reader, I want to read and support your blog as well as get to know you. Getting to know my readers also lets me know what I think they would like to see on the blog.
Commenting also builds community, which is key in promoting your blog.

It's All About You
This is the one place where constant pictures of yourself isn't considered vain, but rather is encouraged. Your readers want to know and see you. Allow your readers to feel connected to you. What are things you would share over a coffee date with your girlfriend? Share that! Maybe even get really courageous and post a vlog. {:I always love hearing what the voices of some of m favorite bloggers sounds like:}

Button Swapping is a Must
I honestly did not even know what button swapping was when I started blogging. Heck, I didn't know what a button was. {:A button is a picture about 150x150 that links people to your blog when they click on it:} This really is a great way to adversities your blog for free. Most button swaps are completely free. All these sweet bloggers ask in return is that you place their button on your blog. The more people see your button popping up on different blogs they visit the more this increases their curiosity and the possibility of them popping on over to your page. You are in essence creating a brand for your blog.

Sponsoring Blogs
Sponsoring other blogs is a great way to gain exposure. Here is a great tip passed on to me by Marquis on the topic…sponsoring blogs can be expensive, so save your money for those sponsorship opportunities that include a guest post or a giveaway. When a guest post or giveaway is attached to a sponsorship, you are more likely to gain followers and readers than just having your button appear on their sidebar for the month. It's like more bang for your buck.

I hope these little tidbits help some of you newer bloggers. They are all just little things I wish I had known sooner.

  1. They are all very helpful tips. I discovered your blog on one of the blog buttons and stopped by to know more about you :) and I'm glad i did.

    Yes, blog button. Though I've been blogging for 2 years now I still don't have a blog button. My most important to-do-list is to create one immediately.

    Blogging is fairly new in this part of the world, can you imagine? hehe...

  4. Well this is great. I feel so identified with this list. They are very important for any blogger. I have to say one time I tried to make a swap exhange and my blog was not any good for that other blogger because I was starting and my blog only had in that moment 2 followers. I wonder all bloggers start just like that... I think helping others is important no matter if you have 1,000 followers or just 1.
