What's in a Name: The Meaning Behind the Blog

I thought today I would share a little bit of my thought process with you behind the blog name "My Life in High Heels".

There's a lot of "surfacy" reasons behind the name: it's cute, I'm the girl whose more comfortable in heels than sneakers, girls bond over shoes, and I am a shoe fanatic.

Those reasons were all the first reasons that came to mind in picking the name, but now that I have thought about the name of the blog and what I want it to represent, it's become a little deeper.

When I was a little girl I remember walking through the store begging for a pair of high heels. My mom seemed to tell me I was too young FOREVER. So I always dreamed of the day I would get to wear high heels with my Sunday dress. There is just something about little girls {:and big girls too:} and their high heels. When you wear them you walk differently, your posture changes, and you suddenly feel put together and more confident.

The first time most of us put on high heels we were clumsy and awkward and had to learn to walk in them. When we did learn to walk in them we realized they could give us sore feet and blisters. {:Those things were not included in our childhood daydreams of high heels:}

When you walk in high heels you have to be a bit more careful to, because even though they make you feel like a million bucks, they can easily become your biggest embarrassment when your heel seems to find the only crack in the sidewalk and you come crashing to the ground as your dress somehow stays up.

This blog is kind of like those high heels. My goal is to create blog posts that make you giggle and also make you feel like the beautiful woman you are, tips on makeup, hair and fashion that might make you feel more confidentI and pictures of shoes so we can all relive those little girl day dreams about that pair of heels we so desperately want to slip on our feet. I also want this blog to be a source of encouragement for the days when you do fall in the crack on the sidewalks and walking in high heels, walking out your day to day life, is challenging.

So my hope is that you find all of those things here.

Walking in high heels isn't always easy, but it's always worth it.

Austin, TX Recap: WARNING Picture overload!

I went to visit this beautiful city for a couple of days and I fell in love. You know how a lot of trips have a song attached to them well this one is mine for my trip to Austin. So push play and scroll on through my Austin adventure.
I went down to Autsin to see some of my friends, Erica and Danny. They were the youth pastors at our church and I worked as a volunteer on their team for 5 years. God relocated them to Austin last summer to take over the youth ministries at a church down there called Shoreline.

So, I landed on Thursday afternoon and we went to a fun taco stand that had some amazing tacos! Then we just headed home for the night because traveling had whooped me.

Friday started off like this…
Holy amazingness. After this we went and hung out at the pool for awhile and I got myself some color finally! Later that night we went to an awesome pizza shop, Home Slice, and walked around downtown Austin for awhile. We stopped in one of the coolest candy shops called The Big Top {:look at those cuties:} and of corse since I was in Texas, I had to go in and try on some cowboy boots.
Now I thought I was going to the land of cowboys down in Austin, but if you ave ever been there you know that's not really the case. I think I saw one guy wearing a cowboy hat the entire time I was down there. Hipsters outnumber cowboys 1,000 to 1 in Austin. The city itself though feels very small town big city if that makes any sense.

Saturday Erica took me shopping at the Domain. It just so happen that the Taste of Austin was happening there that day and it was packed. It was such a cool atmosphere though with live bands and people literally dancing in the street. I had a blast.

{:Of corse kids would play on an armadillo in Texas:}
{:A little selfie with Dan as we waited for my iced late:}

Later that day we met up with some of their friends to go to this amazing hamburger place called Hopdoddy's. It was definitely worth the hype. Then we headed to BlackFinn for dessert.

I was really excited to visit their church on Sunday. I love going to new churches and experiencing how they do things and watching how the people interact. I also got to hear Erica preach in their youth service, which was awesome. She is absolutely ridiculously filled with incredible wisdom. {:well that was a hot mess of a sentence, but I'll keep it:} It was very cool to see what God has called her and Danny to there. They are definitely making their mark on that church and their city.
The rest of the day we decided to just chill. We were all exhausted from the constant going that we all needed a day like that. So we took naps and hangout at the pool again.

Monday was my last day there so we packed it in with all sorts of fun stuff. We ate dinner at this awesome tex-mex place called Hula Hut on the water.

{:Our view from dinner:}

Then we hopped on a boat for a "bat adventure". There is a bridge on Lake Austin that houses 750,000 {:no thats not a typo:} underneath it. Every night at sunset the bats fly out for food. It's apparently a huge tourist attraction so we decided to check it out from the water.
{:It was Dan and Jewel's first boat ride:}

 {:It looks like we're on a roller coaster. Can you tell she is having fun?:}
{:Love this picture:}

Then there were the bats…
Isn't that nuts? You can see all the people lined up on the bridge to watch. And, there were probably at least 2 other boats out watching from the water like us.

Then after the bats, we had this amazing sunset on the water with unbelievable views of the city.

I hope Erica and Danny expect me to come back because you can't let me fall in love with your city and expect that I won't return :)

Happy Friday y'all.

Same Kind of Different as Me-Book Review

{:Purchase here:}

As many of you have read before, my goal this year is to read 20 books. Same Kind of Different as Me is book 10. Halfway there WOOHOO! My friend loaned me this book and said it was fantastic. I don't read many "story" type books but this one…oh em gee. As I started it, I wasn't so sure I was going to finish it, but man am I glad I did. Tears were rolling down my face as I finished this book on the plane home from Austin Tuesday.

The book is about a homeless African-American man who grew up working on a plantation in Louisiana never knowing what it was like to own anything and a millionaire art seller from Texas. The story is about how these two mens lives cross and are forever marked by the impact they have had on each other. The thing that will grip your heart even more as you read this story is that it is true. I am so so glad I didn't put this book down and I encourage you to pick it up if your looking for your next good read.

Tomorrow will be picture overload on the blog as I share with you my trip to Austin!

True or False Answers

Today is the day you find out all the answers from Thursdays True or False Game. Here it goes…

1) True. I have only been out of the country on a cruise to Jamaica, Mexico, and Australia.

2) This one is FALSE. My childhood dream was to be a ballerina. I didn't decide to be a teacher until college.

3) TRUE. Because I am such a big Alabama fan most people think I was born there, but I wasn't. My mom was. I lived in a suburb of Chicago until I was seven and then moved to WV for my dads job.

4)  TRUE again. My brother is 14 {:almost 15:} years older than me.

5) FALSE I have only been in 4 weddings.

6) TRUE. He wasn't just a cowboy, he was once the 7th in the world. I mean, he was kinda a big deal.

7) TRUE TRUE TRUE If you have been following my blog for a bit you would know that Chris Pine and I are getting married. I'll send you an invite when this happens.
{:via:}
Holly drool worthy!

8) FALSE While I do love The Band Perry, Hillsong United or Lady Antebellum are my fav-or-ite.

9) Lies! This one is totally FALSE. I despise Cracker Barrel. If they all burnt I would be cool with that. You know without anyone inside obviously but none the less burn to the ground. {:The store could stay, that place is kinda cool:}

10) TRUE. I love coffee but in order to get healthier I switched to decaf at the beginning of this year.

11) So totally FALSE. I don't hate to cook, but the fire alarm often serenades me if I'm in the kitchen.

12) TRUE. If I am around a rabbit my eyes will swell shut. We often have animals come to the school for the kids to pet and I never can go out with them. I tried to the first year I taught but I couldn't see for the rest of the day.

So how did you do? I'll announce the winner soon

I was kinda a bum this week

It's true, now that school is out I just can't seem to find many occasions to wear anything other than a v-neck and shorts. Sometimes I'll spice it up and wear capris {:shock and gasps:}. Yup, my life is that interesting, I know don't hate. I did have 2 occasions to get past the v-necks this week. I had a training for work {:which was a 8-3 training that could have take an hour and a half max:} and church.
To the training I wore this outfit:
White Capris: they are so old I have no idea where I got them
Orange Tank: TJ Maxx
Cardigan {:because you never know if you will freeze in these meetings:}: Target
Wedges: Nine West
Bracelet: Forever 21

Then Sunday I wore what might be my new favorite outfit.
Cream Knit Blouse: TJ Maxx
Sequin Tank: American Eagle
Skirt: H&M
Bracelet & Wedges: Charolette Russe

Look what I found for only $15!
I have been looking everywhere for a cute coverup and finally found this one at {:brace yourself:}
SEARS!
Who would have thought? I am normally not a fan.

I fly out to Austin tomorrow. Cannot wait to share pictures with y'all when I get back.

xoxo

The Past Week in Pictures {:and a few words:}

I hung out at my parents poolside some this week. {:and turned myself into a lobster:}
 Gracie learned that she is now too big to fit through the fence.

This week I made angel food cake and have been eating it with cool whip and strawberries. Summer desert perfection! {:In case you were wondering:}

Every time I hear the music coming from this ice cream truck I turn into a little kid and just want to start sprinting towards it. So far I have restrained my 26 year old self but one day I just may have to succumb to the 6 year old in me.

Sunday nap time cuddles.

My sweet, beautiful cousin turned 27 Saturday so I had to throw this pic in to celebrate her. {:Yes, I am the bald one…my hair envy of her started at an early age:}

I did a little painting this week. I donated these to an auction we are having at the church to raise money for teens to go to youth camp. A tutorial to make your own can be found here.

I also had a bonfire with some friends. One of my favorite summer pastimes.

What did you get into this week?
