How to Keep Your New Year's Resolutions in 2014

Each New Year people make New Year's resolutions to lose weight; save more, spend less; fall in love; enjoy life. You name it and it is probably someones goals. Sound familiar?

It's healthy to have goals. It's healthy to look back on the past year and want 2014 to be your best year yet.

The sad part is that statistics say out of the millions of people that made New Year's Resolutions and goals this year, a mere 8% will keep them. AND 25% of people will abandon them after only the first week! Why is that?

I think it has a large part to do with the fact that we set the goals, yet fail to plan how we will achieve them.

So here a 3 easy ways to make sure your New Year's goals don't leave you as a statistic.

Write down your goals.

Writing down your goals forces you to make the goal more specific. Instead of writing "be healthier" it allows you to write HOW you want to be healthier. When you write down your goals, place or hang them in a place where they are a constant reminder for you. I use to use Post-its in my bathroom until...

I made a "vision board" for 2014. You can see it in the picture above. It is the red piece of paper with magazine cut outs on my bulletin board. I put pictures on there that are a constant reminders of my goals this year. {:Moving to Australia; becoming healthier; blogging better; etc:}This is a fun and creative way to display your goals in a place where you will constantly see them.  We did this at a New Year's party. We had so much fun and flipped through magazines for literally hours. {:Even if you make a vision board, I still recommend writing your goals down somewhere as well. That way you can make them more specific. The vision board then serves as a constant reminder:}

Set smaller goals to achieve your larger goals.

Like I said above, people set these goals, but then fail to plan how to reach them. If your goal is to save more and spend less this year, your smaller goal for the month of January may be to create a budget. {:If this is a goal I highly recommend you Google the name Dave Ramsey:}

One of my goals is to sell my home this year. My smaller goals in achieving this was to find a realtor I trusted and would like to work with. Check. I have completed that smaller goal so I set another small goal to help achieve the larger goal-never turn down a showing unless absolutely necessary.

Once the smaller goal is met or has started to weave its way into your daily routine, set another.

Make SMART goals.

SMART goals is a term we use at school.

By making your goals, SMART goals you are setting yourself up for success rather than failure. Often peoples goals are far to broad and lack any way of knowing you have reached the goal. If the goal is to lose weight in 2014 and you lose 5 lbs in the year, did you accomplish your goal? I mean you did lose 5 lbs, but I bet thats not what you were thinking.

If your goals have already gone to the weigh side it's not too late to start again. This time do it with intention and set yourself to succeed. Happy goals setting! :)

{:Ps: If you're a blogger and are setting some goals there is a great new link-up starting Monday called "Bloggers Keeping Bloggers Accountable." What a great idea. Visit my gal pal Ashley's blog for all the info. I can't wait to join. This girl needs some accountability for sure.:}

Adventures in Cooking: 55 Calorie Funfetti Cupcakes

In my pursuit of being healthier this year I wanted to find a healthier substitute to one of my favorite sweets - Funfetti! These gems are just 55 calories for the mini cupcakes {:110 for regular size cupcakes:}. A sweet treat that you don't have to wait until your "splurge" day for.

12 oz Sprite Zero
Funfetti Cake Mix
Sugar Free Instant Vanilla Pudding
8 oz lite Cool Whip
Sprinkles {:optional:}

Cupcake Mix:
Do not make the cupcakes according to the box instructions. Mix Sprite and cake mix until there are no lumps. Pour the cake mix into the cupcake pan or liners about half full. Bake on 350 for 22 minutes.

Whisk or blend the vanilla pudding mix {} with 8 oz cool whip. Add sprinkles if desired. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely and icing away.

I hope you enjoy these gems as much as I have!

The Single Girl Diaries-If I never heard it again it would be too soon...

At every stage in life there are those questions that are like nails on a chalkboard. Your senior year in high school it was "what college are your going to" or "what are you doing after you graduate?" When you get married it's "when are you going to have a baby" and "when are you and the husband going to start trying?"
Well, being single comes with its own list of questions and comments I wish I never had to hear again. Honestly, I think most people ask these questions with the most sincere of intentions. But, as the single girl on the receiving end of these questions and comments let me shed some light on how these really make us single peeps feel.

How are you still single?

What you mean: You are one foxy lady. Is the world going to end because I cannot possibly understand why you're still single.
What we actually hear: Clearly you are carrying 5 gallons of crazy in a 2 gallon bucket. All your ex-boyfriends must have seen this because, well, they clearly elected NOT to put a ring on it.

You're next.
This statement is usually said at some bridal shower, bachelorette party, or wedding.

What you mean: A word of encouragement.
What we actually hear: I have actually no clue when you will actually get to do this. You just look pathetic sitting here with those longing, puppy dog eyes so I felt the need to pull some type of encouragement out of thin air. OR We hear: It has to be you next because the only single ones left are seniors in high school. But, if you don't hurry up they too will do this before you.

Your last boyfriend is an idiot for letting you go.

What you mean: Exactly what you said. Truth.
What we hear: This one isn't so much what we hear as where it takes our mind. In the moment, we take it as a compliment. Later though, we often find it as a reason to stroll down memory lane and start obsessing over what we could have changed that would have made "us" work. Maybe if I had never went off on him for not calling after work or maybe if I had been more…. You get the idea.

I really thought you and {:insert ex-boyfriends name:} were going to work.

What you mean: I have no flipping idea what you are even thinking saying this much less what you mean by it!
What we hear: If you couldn't make it work with him….well, good luck. He jet might be the "one that got away."

Be patient.

What you mean: Again, I have no idea. This is like nails on a chalkboard for single girls. Yes, we know this, but telling us doesn't help especially when you are the same age as us and have been with the same guy since high school and have currently been married for 3 years.
What we hear: Nothing, absolutely nothing. You turn into the peanuts teacher because we don't want to hear this. We already know it so just a hug and a smile would suffice. Actually we would love just one time for you, when we are having our lonely moment, to agree with us that sometimes it really does just suck.

So consider yourselves now educated on all the things NOT to say to your single girlfriends or any other single girl for that matter.

So I'm moving to Australia in 6 months-I have some thoughts on that

Wow, six months. Really? I feel like just yesterday it was ten. Well, that is just conformation that the next six months of my life will probably be the fastest I have ever experienced. *sigh* I have mixed emotions on that. I am beyond excited with a mix of healthy nerves and also very sad to be leaving so many amazing people on a different continent.

Dear Australian Visa Peeps: The Visa application should have been in Mandarin Chinese. It would have been just as easy to fill out. I mean thank you for having those little question marks I could click on beside every single thing I needed to fill out, but I actually needed a question mark for your question marks. Ahyiyi! You should also put a disclaimer that says *DO NOT EVEN GIVE YOURSELF A HEADACHE WITH THIS APPLICATION UNLESS YOU ARE LESS THAN 124 DAYS OUT FROM YOUR ARRIVAL DATE* Yes, that is right. After the painful process of trying to fill that sucker out I then learned I could not actually apply yet. Epic Fail!

To My Dear Sweet Home:  You have a very special place in my heart. Even though we will have to part soon, you will forever be my first home. Soon someone else will walk through your doors and love you just as much as I do. So put your best foot forward and let's make a bidding war happen okay? I would really, really, really like that!

Ms. Australian Weather: You are far too hot for this West Virginia girl. The thought of the temperature being 100 makes me sweat like OJ Simpson awaiting the verdict on his trial. BUT 120! You have got to be kidding me. Water bottles melting at a sporting event? Shew. Please don't do this to me when I am there. This girl will pass out faster than you can blink!

Rugby People of Australia: I really have no idea what you do in this sport, but I am told that it is a rough sport. That means you all are tough. Therefore, you need to quit this rugby stuff and create an Australian football league before I get there because I am really going to miss that sport.

So I don't leave this post on a negative tone-on, the positive side I will be enjoying some beautiful views over there.

My Top 5 Must Read Books for 2014

I have been perusing people's blogs, as usual, and this year as I scrolled through new year's resolutions and goals for 2014 I noticed reading seemed to pop up again and again. Since reading 20 books was one of my goals last year I thought I would share some of my favorites with you.
1. Start Something that Matters: This books is written by the founder of TOMS. I love the shoes but I love the story of this company even more. He masterminded a plan to combine his passions for charity and business and built a global company that is thriving! Check out my review of this book here.
2. The Circle Maker: If you are looking for a book to encourage and increase your faith in 2014, this is your book. Honestly, this is one I recommend reading every year as just a great reminder of the infinite possibilities we tap into through prayer. You can find more of my thoughts on this book here
3. Same Kind of Different as Me: This is a true story of backwoods homeless man who grew up practically in slavery, a wealthy art dealer and the journey of their friendship. You'll laugh and cry in this book. A friend recommended it to me, and even let me borrow her copy to read, and now I am passing the recommendation on. I also did a book review on this one.
4. Sun Stand Still: This is another book that will stretch and grow your faith. Pastor Steven Furtick is the author and does an incredible job of helping the reader understand what it means to tap into God's greatness through our relationship with him and what it means to pray bold prayer. Prayers that are big enough to make the sun stand still. Find out more about the book here.
5. It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken: Single ladies if you have a broken heart or just can't cut all ties from a guy you know you should, you will laugh your way to closure through this one. There are so many things in this book that helped me see clearly everything that I kept clouding up with my reminiscing heart. A must read for any single girl, broken-hearted or not.

Plaid & Monogram

No need to check your calendar, today really is Tuesday. I am doing my style post a day early this week. Everyone needs to mix it up a little, right? Consider this my little part in helping you break out of the same ol' same ol'.

I love this vest. I got mine at Old Navy, but I found a similar one from American Eagle.
Then my sweet aunt monogrammed it for me. I love this vest and I get countless compliments on it!

More than just a day to remember

It's really easy to breeze by today as another holiday on the calendar. Another day that gets us off work. We might give a passing thought to the man this day is about but that is usually about it.

Martin Luther King Jr. stood for equality, peace, love, and justice. It would be easy and convenient to look back on where we have come from since the time of segregation and think injustice is a thing of the past.

However, I have a hard the believing that if Mr. King were alive today he would be sitting back in his rocker thinking that his work is done.

In a world that has more slaves today than ever (27million apron.), where gendercide is the cause of death for far too many girls, and children are being forced to become child soldiers we are far from done fighting the fight.  Injustice still remains and we are left to carry on the legacy or breaks it's chains.

Now is certainly not the time to be silent.

Tales of a Kindergarten Teacher

I feel like I haven't written one of these things in forever! I suppose it has only been like three days but it feels like eons. It feels good to get back in front of the computer to do something other than input grades and write report card comments. Report cards are definitely the big thing that took me away from this sweet blog.

But, today I am back with a blog post that will hopefully give you some giggle this Saturday morning. My friend Ashley over at It is What you Make it wrote this post that made me laugh and shake my head in agreement the whole way through. It was all the things "said not teacher ever". It was awesome!

Today I thought I would share some of the many moments that had me laughing, crying, or a little bit of both. I m convinced that teachers should have a reality show. They would get some good stuff. I guarantee it. A ratings hit!

Like they say, out of the mouth of babes.

My first year of teaching I had the most flirtatious five year old you have ever met. Every morning he would wrap my neck in a hug and then signal with his finger for me to come down lower. I learned after day one not to do that because I got a big lip smacker right on the lips. I always told him we didn't kiss our teachers, but that sneaky devil still got a few in when I wasn't on high alert.

Anyways this little cutie pie was not just flirtatious with me but any cute five year old female too. They were all lining up to leave the classroom and I turned my back to do or get something momentarily. When I turned around he had his hands on either side of the girl's face behind him and was ready to go in for the kill. To my horror I shout out  "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" To which he replied "what Miss Miller? I was just going to sexy kiss her." This is the moment all instincts of "what would a good teacher do" flew out the window. I shrieked as my hands were flying in the air "We don't kiss! And we definitely don't sexy kiss!!!!!!"

Yep, they don't teach you how to deal with this kind of stuff in college.

Then another day I had the epic reality show kind of day. Let me preface this story with the fact that I teach five year olds and the tables and chairs in my classroom are very low and small. Now, back to the story. So it was jeans day and I was sitting at one of the very low tables in the classroom to work with a small group. The table touched the top of my legs when I was seated, so I pulled my legs to the side to cross them. As I crossed them I noticed a very large yellow stain right above my knee. I was looking at it thinking "I wouldn't have put on jeans with that big of a stain on them this morning. How did I get this?" Then I see the stain is a bit...crusty. I slowly place my hand on the table to brace myself to look under it. BOOGERS! It was not just a few boogers. It was a colony that seemed to be reproducing at the speed of rabbits.

The same day, actually only about 5 minutes later, one of my students (her and Dora could be twins) told me she needed to go to the bathroom. I asked the typical teacher question "is it an emergency?" To which she said "I'm going to pee my pants." I told her to go go and before I got the two words out of my mouth she said "I peed my pants." WHAT!? You asked me not even 2 second ago. Okay, so I start to walk over to her at her small group and as I am walking I hear these weird sounds coming from my assistant. It is like she's trying to speak but can't get the words out. Then I look down to realize why. Here I am with my still wet pants from washing boogers off and my cute new toms find themselves in Lake Michigan of PEE! The girl didn't just pee herself she peed a puddle so large that under half of table there was a puddle.

Good times. Good times.

This last one didn't happen to me but a coworker. It's too good not to share.
(Student): "My mommy is sick today."
(Teacher): "Aw, I am sorry to hear that. I hope she feels better."
(Student): "Yea, too much tequila."
(Teacher): Silence

Well, I must admit, my job is never dull. And I have about 20 more stories to go with these. I'll save those for another day. Maybe a Tuesday when we all need a good laugh.

Happy Weekend!

My Five Winter Beauty Must Haves

Winter can be brutal on us. From the cold weather and wind outside to the dry heat inside. Here are my favorite beat the cold beauty picks.

1/ dos Egg: If you haven't tried this magnificent chapstick yet. You need to get on it. I made my mom buy it and she hasn't regretted it. You won't either. You can easily pick one up as your checking out at Target or Wal-Mart next time.

2/ eos Lotion: I had never used this lotion until a friend got it for me for my birthday and I am now ob-sessesd. I am constantly slathering the miracle potion on my hands. Better yet, it is the perfect size to fit in your purse or desk drawer. You can pick this one up at Ulta.

3/ Cholesterol: You can't neglect your hair this time of year. The heat does a number on it. I have been using cholesterol on my hair for awhile and it's fantastic. Wash your hair with shampoo then put the cholesterol on and comb through to evenly distribute. Then put a shower cap on or wrap your hair up in a towel and leave it on for up to two hours. Viola hair rehydrated! I pick this one up from Sally's.

4/ Vaseline: You probably even have this around the house. I swear by this for my hands and feet at night. Slather it on and slip on a pair of socks and cotton gloves. I also use it on my eyelids and under eyes if they are extra dry.

5/  CeraVe: My dermatologist recommended this moisturizer to me and it's the best if you have sensitive skin. I'm always skeptical of moisturizers because of my less than flawless skin. But this keeps my combination skin well hydrated throughout the winter months. I get mine at Wal-Mart.

The Single Girl Diaries - Another Bridesmaid

I started 2013 off thinking I was finally going to be the bride and not the bridesmaid. I thought 2013 was the year I put on my "28th dress" so to speak. Well, not quite. On New Years Eve last year, my on again off again boyfriend of 5 years, ended things. {: Side Note: This is not a ex boyfriend bashing post. He's an amazing man of God, just not my amazing and not my man of God-Us single girls would fare a lot better if we recognized the difference:}  Even though I knew it wasn't Gods plan for me, it didn't ease the pain so much, but what did was my girlfriends.

After my boyfriend and I broke up, one of my acquaintances from church asked me to dinner one night. I didn't know much about her other than she was a rockstar leader at our church and seemed to be an incredible person who was full of life and passion. That dinner ended up lasting, I think, almost 4 hours {:our poor waitress:}. That night was pretty much the beginning of an amazing friendship. She's now one of my closest friends and a source of accountability without judgment. She challenges me and encourages me. She laughs with me, but also has no problem telling me what's up.

So to say that 2013 didn't start out well {:also on New Years Eve I went to another ex boyfriends wedding reception, and my car got hit:} or go according to plan might be the understatement of the year! But sometimes you have to open up your life to the unexpected, and even the unwanted surprises.  Sometimes staying open to surprise packages leads to surprise blessings. That's what happened to me. In 2013 I didn't get the groom or the 28th dress like I thought I would, but I got something just as amazing, a new bridesmaid.

Never under estimate what God is working and orchestrating behind the scenes even through difficulty and sorrow. Often times, it's those seasons and moments you look back and see Gods hand the most, even when you couldn't see it then because you were inside the out working of a blessing.

Gotta Get That Dirt Off Your…Feet

I don't know what's wrong with me. I can't get off these rap songs as post titles. We will all hope this phase ends quickly and painlessly. I just couldn't resist though; it goes to perfectly. Plus, everyone loves a little Jay Z every now and then right?

So anyways. I was at a dinner the other night and my pastor was speaking on hardships and the "dirt" we get on our feet as we walk through life. And, well, I was inspired and now you get a post on it.

In biblical times it was customary to wash others feet as a symbol of honor. They lived in a time where they often wore Jesus cruisers sandals and traveled great distances on foot. As they walked they obviously collected mud, dust, clay, pebbles on their feet. When others welcomed them into their home, it was customary for a servant, or even the host to wash the feet of his/her guest. This wasn't you typical "you're feet are nas-ta and you ain't comin in my house with that on your feet" episode. It was more of a gesture that stated "you have been through so much, but now that your my guest, I want to honor you and refresh you while you're in my home."

I believe this to be symbolic of our lives. Though we don't wear Jesus cruisers anymore {:or shouldn't:}, life can be messy. We often walk around with the "dust" from life on our feet, but as times have changed we forget that we need to wash our feet, and just as importantly if not more, wash others feet.

Don't take the dust of yesterday into your tomorrow. Washing your own feet is a choice. You can choose to be mad and walk around with dirty feet or you can choose to wash the dirt and start off everyday dust free.

Sometimes though people aren't in a place emotionally where they even have the energy or know how to wash their own feet to get all the dirt and grim off. Sometimes they need someone else to get down on their knees and wash their feet for them. They need people around them who care enough about them to brush the dirt off their feet when they simply can't. We can be those people….if we chose to be.

Then there are other times when only Jesus can kneel down and clean the mud off your feet that has been so deeply caked on there. The best thing is He will and He has {:John 13:}.  Jesus was sent to be our Savior but the most beautiful thing about him is that he considered himself a servant. A servant who came to the wash the feet of his people so we could then take those same feet and bring the good news to others.

Apple Bottom Jeans, Vest with the Furr

Okay you caught me, these aren't Apple Bottom Jeans {:all though I should probably invest since I have no junk in the trunk:} Ah well, I can embrace it, even if the back pockets of my jeans fold over because there is noting to fill it up.

The title of the post came simply because I couldn't stop singing the song as I was editing these pictures.

Snow Day Babbelings

WARNING: You are about to read complete and utter randomness. Consider yourself warned.

Well it's not so much as a snow day as the fact that coldmageddon is here and it has me all...

No but seriously, look at this. It's insanity.

Making poor Gracie girl go out and go potty feels like animal abuse. But she sure does look cute in her parka. Don't you agree? Oh that face!

But, lucky for me I will not be setting foot outside today! I will be lounging all day in my oversized sweats and sweatshirt, makeup-less, while my hair resembles a rat's nest. I am totally okay with that! The upside of being a teacher. I will miss that when I move for sure.

Speaking of moving I think I will try applying for my Visa again today since I'm off. I tried once but got flustrarted {:Yes, that's a word. Its a mixture of frustrated and flustered!:} This act will take the prayers of many to be successful, probably. Oh man the hoops you have to jump through and the documentation you have to have and input. Yikes! Please don't let me screw this up.

I might even get really productive and work on my lesson plans for next week and clean the house some. That's a big MAYBE because that might require energy, and who has that on a day like this?

In other news, look who had her second birthday! How did that happen. I love my Sweet P to pieces! You can't tell me this does not just melt your heart?

I also found where I'm going to get married. No, you didn't miss anything. I don't have a fiancé or even a boyfriend for that matter but who needs one of those to plan for the future! {:Oh don't act like you don't have a wedding board on your Pinterest page single girl!:} It's kind of amazing and this picture doesn't even come close to capturing it! One day.

Okay, I am done torturing you with my ADD post. Happy Tuesday; stay warm!

Making 2014 Scandalous

Everyone secretly, or not so secretly loves a good scandal. {:This intrigue seems to heighten if you live in a small town:} A good scandal is what gets everyone buzzing over the phone or over coffee with conversations that start something like: "you will never guess what I heard...", "did you hear about...", "can you believe...". Just watch one episode of the show Scandal and you too will know that you are not immune to loving {:at least a litte:} a good scandal.
Scandals garner some serious buzz and that's exactly what I want my year to be filled with-SCANDAL. But, before you go and get your judgmental panties in a bunch, I want a scandal not on the world's terms but rather in reverse.
I want 2014 to be filled with the:
If you read my "Thoughts on 2014" post then you know one of my goals is to love more and talk less. It's a good idea in thought, but far too often we, myself included, choose to talk about people and their current situations rather than love the people in them. It's scandalous because we all say we want to do this but rarely do. Talking is always easier than loving.
This might be my favorite one because this is one the one Jesus constantly modeled through his actions. He ate with prostitutes, thieves, the worst of the worst. Why? Because he saw their future beyond where they currently were. He saw them through the eyes of the cross that He would soon bear. What would happen if we started doing the same? What if we looked at people in our world that other people have written off as a waste or too far gone and showed them grace by seeing past the now and seeing into the future God has for them and that Jesus died for? Grace is scandalous because the world doesn't teach it. The world says keep yourself safe and far from these people. You're not like them. You're better than them. Grace says God died on the same cross for my sin and theirs. Grace says I can't leave them behind because I know how good the other side is, and I know a God who is waiting for them.
Yea, I went there. The big F word. It even taste bitter rolling off our tongue. We all have these secret ideas of when it's "okay" to not forgive. When someone steals something from you, when someone harms someone or something you love, when someone breaks "girl or guy code", when that you know what ticks you off at work. We all have these certain things in our mind where we believe it permissible not to forgive. That's why when people forgive these kinds of things it's scandalous! I am praying nothing to this extreme happens but lets forgive more than what is expected. After all, "unforgivness is like drinking a poison and expecting someone else to die."
Me, me, me. We live in a world of I want it and I want it now because I am out for number one. But that's never the way we created to live. We are to look to the interest of others first. {:Philippians 2:4:} When we are selfless it feels amazing. We have all done something for someone else that we can look back on and remember how good it felt. That's because it's what we were created for.
There is a woman in our town who sold everything she had to become homeless. We have sex trafficking that goes on in our city and she has devoted her life to meeting these girls on the streets. Her vision goes beyond just meeting these girls, but to create a ranch of sorts where they will go and learn what it feels like to do more than just get by, to have the nice things in life. To be loved and respected. THAT is scandalous. It certainly has people talking in our town because many people think "why would she do it?" It's a scandal of selflessness.
So what would happen if a company of men and women decided to change just four things in their lives this year and made a scandal?

Thoughts on 2014

Ilove the fresh beginning a new year brings. There is just something about January first that has people around the world allowing themselves to wipe the slate clean and begin again. As I am writing this I am reminded that though we have this sweet feeling at the beginning of each year God allows us to have this feeling every morning if we so choose.

"Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning." Lamentations 3:23

I have this unexplainable expectancy for the new year. This year is going to be filled with some pretty big changes but if God is for me, who can be against me? That very thought makes my eyes burn as tears build in them {:but I better pull myself together since I am writing this post in a public place:}.

I've spent the morning at a local coffee shop just reflecting on 2013 and making plans and initiatives for the new year. I have a passion for this year to be a year that as I sit at another coffee shop next year on January 1, 2015 to look back and see a year where Jesus made a significant mark on my life.

So this year I resolve to love more and talk less; be fearlessly confident to the call of God; build a life in and on and around Jesus; create a healthier life; make more time for friends; and push the limits of my comfort zone.

Here's to beautiful endings, big changes, and adventurous new beginnings. Here's to 2014. Cheers!

                                                              Happy New Year!
